Title Global polarization and spin alignment in relativistic heavy ion collisions - new avenue for RHIC physics

Abstract It is proposed that due to the spin-orbital coupling in relativistic heavy ion collisions, particles produced can be globally polarized w.r.t to the direction of global angular momentum. Such novel phenomena has strong connections to other fundamental QCD physics, and it opens a new dimension to study the bulk property of Quark Gluon Plasma. In this talk, I will present recent measurement on (anti)lambda polarization and phi meson spin alignment made by the STAR experiment at RHIC. I will also discuss the implications of the result.
Speaker's CV Dr. Aihong Tang received his Ph. D in 2002 from Kent State University, since then he has worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory as a post-doc, assistant and associate scientist, and now, tenured scientist. Dr. Tang's main research interest is the study of the bulk property of the Quark Gluon Plasma created in relativistic heavy ion collisions. That includes a wide range of topics like anisotropic flow and fluctuations, global polarization and spin alignment, heavy flavor physics and exotic search. In particular he is recognized as one of the pioneers in measuring anisotropic flow and searching for exotic particles. Dr. Tang has been a driving force behind many important STAR publications, including two papers published in Nature. His work has accumulated 1600+ citations for those publications alone that Dr. Tang is a principle author.
